Why specifying the new ASTM A1069 Standard is an Advantage | Stainless Structurals

ASTM International just recently published the new revised standard A1069/A1069M-19. This is the standard specification for laser and laser hybrid welded stainless steel bars, plates and shapes. This revision provides some distinct advantages to engineers and architects for when they specify A1069 for their projects.


The latest revision to ASTM A1069

There are several additions to the new A1069 standard that will help those in the architecture, engineering and construction industries when specifying stainless steel profiles. Some of the major highlights include:

  • The addition of the Laser Hybrid method to the Scope.

  • The addition of Duplex Stainless Steel to the Scope.

  • The addition of Hollow Square and Rectangle Sections as those covered by the standard, along with the reference to A554.

  • Reference to AWS Standards 1.6 for structural welding and 7.2, 7.4, and 7.6 for the laser related standards.

  • Reference to ASME SA-370 and Section IX.

  • The addition of Strength Categories under the Mechanical Properties.

The Importance of the Mechanical Properties and Strength Categories

All of the above mentioned additions to the standard will assist the AEC community with specifying ASTM A1069. The biggest advantage for engineers and architects with their designs is the addition of the strength categories as shown in TABLE 1 – Mechanical Test Requirements – under section 5 for Materials and Manufacture.
Strength grade 1 means that the mechanical properties shall meet those of the proper specification such as A240, A276 or A479, which call for a minimum yield strength of 25ksi.
Strength grade 2 for austenitic stainless steel calls for higher mechanical values, referenced in Table 1, that are an upgrade over the basic properties of A240 (Grade1). Grade 2 calls for a 35 ksi minimum yield strength. This is advantageous because if an engineer specifies A1069 grade 2, the mechanical properties such as yield strength are higher and so lighter sections can be used in the structural design. This allows for lower weights and a significant cost savings.
The addition of Duplex and Super Duplex to the standard and to Table 1 is also beneficial for engineers. Similar to strength grade 2, Duplex and Super Duplex have increased mechanical properties over ASTM A240. These increased values allow for designs of lighter sections and an overall cost savings.
