Tools that make mechanic's life easier How to choose tyre service and car repair tools

There are loads of things that you can do much faster, so that you go home quickly. Makes sense to you? We gathered a few products that can help during everyday work at car/tyre service.

Tyre marking pen

This is not another marker you can but at any mall. You might be thinking – why bother if I have the chalk that works really well? Oh, sorry – that’s the misconception.

Don’t forget that tyre chalks would definitely be worse than the pens. This mainly pertains to the writing quality, as the tyre marking pen is able to provide a durable and easy-to-read writing.

When you choose a pen which is designed for tyres, you choose comfort. It is able to provide a durable writing on different surfaces, like:

  • glass,
  • metal,
  • wood.

This means, you can easily use it to mark parts taken out of the car. Imagine you have  a few cars that you are working on at the moment. The pen would let you mark different surfaces – on windows, for instance. And it takes very little time – no need to correct the writing or something.

That missing cap

Every mechanic knows that. Starting to work/change some parts/anything. And you begin to look for the certain cap – that proverbial 10 mm. And you cannot find this as it went missing. How to avoid it?

Theoretically, you can keep the caps in a case and carry around. In practice, this is not too convenient. Would you be putting it from place to place? It might be a better idea to get a special handle for a wrench and the caps. What is that like? See for yourself:

How does it work?

The handle is able to carry the following:

  • impact wrench
  • 4 caps

It comes with two magnets. You can easily put it on any surface made of metal – be it lift’s posts for instance. So you will have both the wrench and the caps at hand. There are also the handles mounted with screws – for instance, against the wall or other car service furniture.

Why would that handle ever make sense? Well, it makes reaching out for tools just more convenient and less time-consuming. You won’t have to run around for the caps, as they would all be stored in one place. This means, you will save a few minutes every time.

What socket caps should you choose?

Contemporary cars often have solutions that can surprise the mechanic. It might be a good idea to have tools just for any occasion. And this pertains to socket caps too. What should you keep in mind while choosing them?

First up – the material. Good quality socket caps are made of chromium-molibden steel. This provides the right hardness and durability, so essential for service jobs. When compared against other types of steel, they are more resistant to corrosion and high temperature.

One more thing. There are socket caps designed for the so called difficult screws – for instance, in wheels or stud bolts. You can use them in impact wrenches, for instance. A specially designed ending makes it much easier to remove even the damage screws. And we mean the ones that you were unable to remove with standard tools

An extension would be a good idea, too. Using this, you will be able to reach to hard-to-reach spots.

Transmission jack

This is just another must-have in car repair services. Well – you can remove a gearbox without a jack. But honestly – why bother? Obviously, taking out a transmission with 40 kg of weight won’t be a problem. But what would you do with gearboxes that weigh 90 kg? Well, that would be a pain.

And if you had a transmission jack, the whole procedure would be easier

  • drive the car onto the lift/repair pit,
  • provide support to the part,
  • put the jack under the transmission,
  • remove the transmission,
  • pull the transmission down – it’s ready for repair

Just think how much time you saved.

Car creeper

This one may not seem like the most essential thing for mechanics. But – have you ever tried moving on the floor without creeper under your back? Well, that could be painful! So, how to choose the best car creeper?

Good car creepers have 6 castors with bushings. Why is it important? Well, they move around freely, so you can move to the chosen spot quickly.

What are good creepers made of? Usually it is composite. This provides the best durability against damage that may happen while using at a workshop.
