WTC3

The World Trade Center Complex Tower 3

After the horrendous attacks on September 11, 2001 to the World Trade Center Twin Towers, both Mayor Rudy Giuliani and President George W. Bush vowed that the site would be rebuilt and we will show the world that America is stronger than ever. It took many years and hundreds of proposals, designs and negotiations for the proposed towers and other developments to become a reality. With the opening of 7 World Trade Center in 2006 to the opening of 3 World Trade Center in 2018, this complex is now home to many projects and is a hub for tourists, locals and more in New York City.

The complex itself consists of five towers, the National September 11 Memorial, the National September 11 Museum, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, and Liberty Park. The newest edition is World Trade Center Tower 3, which opened in June of 2018. WTC3, designed by architect Richard Rogers of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is the second tallest building in the World Trade Center complex and is the fifth tallest building in New York City.

Duplex Stainless Steel Mullions for the Lobby Curtain Wall

In early 2017, Mariani Metal Fabricators contacted Stainless Structurals about a unique project in New York City for the World Trade Center Tower 3. The design called for a unique three-story lobby that would provide a “big picture window” of the Memorial Park right outside the tower. There were challenges to be met for the project. One was the architect’s detailed design for the aesthetic look of the lobby curtain wall, and the other being the Port Authority requirements.

It was determined the best material to meet the safety requirements and to meet the aesthetic requirements was a 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel, Laser Fused mullion. The duplex provides added strength with almost double the yield strength of type 316/L stainless. Laser fusion provides a very sharp cornered profile that meets AESS guidelines and is very visually appealing.

In total, Stainless Structurals produced over 57,000 pounds of custom laser fused mullions ranging in lengths from 19 feet to 26 feet for the project. Laser Fusion allowed for these custom profiles to meet the tight tolerances required and to provide the products on time to meet the construction schedule for Mariani. When the project was complete, not only did it look fantastic, but it also met or exceeded the New York City building code and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s requirements for safety standards.
